Figure 32
The figure on the extreme left of the central doorway represents Melchizadek, the priest king of Jerusalem to whom Abraham gave tithes (see figure 29).35 Melchizadek carries a chalice containing, according to one of Chartresâ most knowledgeable guides, Malcolm Millar, bread and wine.36 Next to the priest king is the figure of the great patriarch Abraham with his son Isaac in front of him, bound and ready to be sacrificed (see figure 30). A paternal hand rests beneath the chin of Isaac whom Abraham is prepared to sacrifice just as Our Heavenly Father later sacrifices His son Jesus at Golgotha. An angel is carved above Melchizedekâs head and Abraham is depicted in such a way that there can be no doubt that he is looking directly at the angel, (see figure 31) who is bringing the patriarch a message from God himself telling him that sacrifice of Isaac is not necessary as Abraham has amply demonstrated his willingness to accept Godâs will. The prophet Moses stands beside the patriarch, carrying in his arms the tablets of the Law and bearing a staff entwined by a brazen serpent (see figure 32) with which, it is claimed, he healed those bitten by poisonous snakes as a prophesy of Jesus healing the spiritual wounds of mankind by his sacrifice as recounted in the Gospel: âAs Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.â37 Next to Moses is the figure of his brother Aaron with a lamb and the sacrificial knife, yet another prefiguring of the Lamb of God. Aaron was, of course, the ancestor of the Cohens, the hereditary high priests of the people of Israel. The statue of King David completes the set of figures on the left of the central doorway of the north porch. He is depicted carrying a spear and, some would claim, a crown of thorns, again held to be a prophesy of the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus.38
Esoteric interpretation of the same statues tells a somewhat different story however, one that is completely in line with the modern understanding of the true history of the people of Israel from the time of Abraham up to the reign of King David; a story that stresses the continuous, initiatory and Gnostic nature of the spirituality that was Jesusâ true heritage. Melchizedek, far from having bread and wine in his chalice, is shown very clearly to hold in his left hand a chalice with a stone protruding from it. The mystical stone that fell from heaven and that is a symbol of the Holy Grail that we will describe in a later chapter. He, as âKing of Salemâ was clearly an Egyptian as that city was a province of Egypt at that time.
The figure of Abraham is interpreted esoterically, in very nearly the same manner as the Church would describe, however the stress put on the importance of Godâs message sent by means of the angel is somewhat different.
